Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Unveiled: A New Era for Overnight Rail Travel in India

September 1, 2024, Bengaluru, India.

In a significant development for India’s railway infrastructure, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled the prototype of the Vande Bharat sleeper coach at the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) facility in Bengaluru on Sunday. This marks a pivotal moment in Indian Railways’ commitment to enhancing passenger travel experience, especially for long-distance overnight journeys.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train, designed for speeds up to 160 kmph with testing speeds reaching 180 kmph, promises to revolutionize overnight travel with its advanced features and comfort. The trainset consists of 16 coaches, including 11 AC three-tier, four AC two-tier, and one AC first-class coach, offering a total of 823 berths. This configuration aims to cater to a broad spectrum of travelers, from budget-conscious to luxury-seeking passengers.

Key features of the Vande Bharat sleeper include:-

World-Class Amenities: The train boasts amenities like integrated reading lights with USB charging, public announcement systems, visual information displays, and security cameras. Special berths and toilets for differently-abled passengers enhance inclusivity.

Safety and Comfort: Built with stainless steel and equipped with crashworthy elements, the train adheres to the highest fire safety standards. The berths are designed with extra cushioning for comfort, surpassing the standards set by existing luxury trains like the Rajdhani Express.

Environmental Control: The train maintains optimal oxygen levels and features virus protection, reflecting lessons learned from the global health crisis.

Operational Efficiency: The self-propelled train set ensures faster acceleration and deceleration, promising a smoother, more efficient journey compared to traditional trains.

The unveiling was not just a showcase of the new train but also an announcement of intent. Railway Minister Vaishnaw laid the foundation stone for a new Vande Bharat manufacturing facility at BEML, signaling the government’s commitment to scaling up production and innovation in railway technology.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train is expected to undergo rigorous trials over the next ten days before further track testing. If all goes according to plan, passenger operations could commence within the next three months, aiming to serve routes covering distances of 800 km to 1,200 km, ideal for overnight travel.

This development is part of a broader vision to transform rail travel in India with four configurations of Vande Bharat trains, including chair cars, sleeper cars, metro cars, and the Amrit Bharat, aimed at catering to different travel needs across the country.

As India moves towards enhancing its rail network with such technological advancements, the Vande Bharat sleeper train stands as a testament to the country’s progress in rail technology, promising not just speed but also comfort, safety, and luxury for its passengers.
