In a significant development in the bilateral relations between India and the Maldives, the latter has officially handed over 28 islands to India for the development of water and sanitation facilities. The handover was formalized during a meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu.
The project, funded by the Indian government with a budget of $110 million, is expected to benefit around 28,000 people. The initiative is part of India’s commitment to supporting the Maldives in its development efforts and strengthening the ties between the two nations.
President Muizzu expressed his gratitude to the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their continuous support to the Maldives. He emphasized that the partnership between the two countries remains strong and continues to bring mutual benefits.
The handover of the 28 islands is seen as a significant diplomatic achievement for India, particularly in the context of regional geopolitics and India’s strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region. The move is also viewed as a setback for China, with whom the Maldives has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The Indian government has assured that the development of water and sanitation facilities on these islands will be carried out in an environmentally sustainable manner, ensuring minimal impact on the local ecosystems.
The project is expected to be completed within the next two years, with the Indian government providing technical and financial support throughout the process. The handover of the 28 islands marks a new chapter in the India-Maldives relationship, fostering cooperation and mutual growth.
