Udaipur, Rajasthan – In a distressing turn of events, Udaipur, a city known for its historical beauty and cultural harmony, has been thrust into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons following a stabbing incident at a government school. A Class 10 student was stabbed by a fellow classmate, an act that has not only left the community in shock but has also ignited communal tensions across the city.
The incident occurred during a lunch break when a 15-year-old Hindu student was attacked by a Muslim student, identified as Ayan Sheikh, over what sources describe as an old dispute. The victim, Devraj, suffered multiple stab wounds and is currently under medical care, with his condition reported as stable but serious. This act of violence was not just an assault but has been perceived by many as an attack on communal harmony.
Following the stabbing, Hindu organizations and local youth took to the streets in protest. The situation escalated quickly, leading to the closure of markets in various parts of Udaipur due to fear of violence. The protests saw members of Hindu groups reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, seen as an act of solidarity in Hindu culture.
The local administration, in an attempt to quell the unrest, took several decisive steps. Mobile internet services were suspended for 24 hours to prevent the spread of misinformation and to curb potential incitement through social media. Section 144 was Imposed as this legal measure prohibits the assembly of more than four people, aiming to prevent further escalation of the situation. All educational institutions were ordered to remain shut until further notice, a move to ensure the safety of students and staff.
The house where the accused resided was demolished, deemed illegal by the authorities. This action has sparked a debate over the appropriateness of such measures, yet this policy has shown great results in maintaining law and order in Uttar Pradesh under Yogi Adityanath Govt.
