Terror Attack in Ganderbal Leaves Six Dead, Including Doctor.

Ganderbal, October 20, 2024 – A tragic incident unfolded today in Ganderbal, Jammu and Kashmir, where a terrorist attack targeted a construction site, resulting in the death of six individuals, including a doctor. The attack, which took place in the Gagangir area near Sonamarg, has sent shockwaves through the region, drawing immediate condemnation from local and national leaders.

The assault, carried out by what preliminary reports suggest were two terrorists, targeted both local and non-local workers engaged in the construction of a tunnel. The casualties include five migrant laborers and a doctor, with several others injured, some critically. The injured have been rushed to nearby medical facilities, with the more severe cases being referred to SKIMS, Srinagar.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his condolences and outrage over the attack, labeling it as “dastardly and cowardly.” He noted, “The casualty figure from the Gagangir attack might not be final as several injured are in critical condition.” Security forces have swiftly cordoned off the area, engaging in a massive search operation to apprehend the perpetrators. Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded sharply, promising severe repercussions for those involved, stating, “Those behind this heinous act will not be spared and will face the harshest response from our security forces.” This sentiment was echoed by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who assured that the perpetrators of this “despicable act will not go unpunished.” The attack not only highlights the ongoing security concerns in the region but also underscores the vulnerability of civilian workers, especially those from outside the state, who often become targets in such incidents.

The construction site, part of a significant infrastructure project, was meant to bring development but has now become a symbol of the region’s unresolved terrorism issues. This incident comes closely on the heels of another attack where a migrant laborer from Bihar was found murdered, indicating a possible pattern targeting non-locals involved in development projects. The government and security forces have been put on high alert, with increased patrols and checks in the area to prevent further such incidents.

As the nation mourns, there’s a call for unity and resilience against terror. The attack in Ganderbal serves as a grim reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining peace and security in conflict zones, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and a robust response against terrorism. The investigation into this attack is in its early stages, with authorities promising a thorough probe to bring the culprits to justice.
